If You Choose Walking, Do It Well

By Tom Herrin

Lots of people are into exercise.  For those who may be just starting, going at it a little easier can be a good way.  Those who already walk in their daily routine may be a little ahead of those who don't, but there are actually some things that may be considered good practices for something as simple as walking.

Many people probably feel as if walking is one of those things that comes natural to everyone.  For those who believe that, they may want to spend some time observing others as they walk in various places.  It may become pretty obvious that some people labor as they walk.  In these cases, it may be as much a matter of poor form as it is being out of shape.  And when they have bad form, it is more difficult to get what they should achieve out of the activity.

Practice Good Walking Posture

Just like everything else people do, using correct practice or form can instill good habits that may endure.  When people walk, it is important that they make every attempt to hold themselves as upright as possible.  This should help them to tuck in their stomach as well.  Trying to keep the head relatively level to the ground will help to reinforce these practices.  Using good posture to walk can help people to feel less tired and have fewer aches from slouching.  Many times, those common aches are mostly a result of bad posture.

Use a Good Stepping Motion

People do all sorts of things as they walk.  Much of this is due to simply repeating bad habits.  In order to get the most out of their walk, the right kind of stepping motion can make it much more enjoyable and easier to go for longer distances.  The preferred motion is to strike the ground first with the heel, then roll through the step to the toe.  Pushing off with the toe is what propels a person as they continue.  Bringing the back leg forward again is what makes the whole motion smooth.  Walking with such a practice as this can make the experience much less of a chore and more of a pleasure.

Let It Be Natural

No one really wants to do any kind of activity that makes them uncomfortable.  If you can get your walking form in good order, you will likely have a lot more fun doing it.  A little thought and practice will make it seem very natural.  Once you get to that point, there will be no limit on what you can do or how long you can do it.  I enjoy a good walk; hopefully, it will be a great thing for you.
