Can Coughing Cause Back Pain?

By Tom Herrin

Anytime people think about the causes of back pain, they likely think of it as a result of some kind of accident or other injury.  The fact is, there are several other causes of back pain.  One that can happen but is often overlooked is coughing.  It is not so much that coughing is a direct cause of it, but anytime people have some kind of sudden, unexpected move, they may have the risk of injury.  If you find yourself with sudden back pain after some series of events, such as coughing, a visit to a chiropractor may be the quickest way to find relief.

The Back Can Be Tricky

It may be difficult to believe that back pain can be the result of some seemingly minor event, but it is possible.  One of the reasons is that their body is not in a ready position to protect itself.  When these moves are combined with a few other subtle strains, back pain may occur.  If we somehow irritate the muscles that protect the back, they may become inflamed.  A joint dysfunction may occur in which pressure is placed on a nerve.  This causes pain.  It is sometimes dull, but at other times, it can be sharp and stabbing.

Chiropractors Are There to Help

For many, chiropractors seem to be the best source of relief from back pain.  In a visit, an individual normally is given an adjustment in which the injured joint is gently manipulated so that it is restored to its optimal position.  When this happens, pressure is taken off of the nerve, and the pain is relieved.  Since it is done naturally, there is no risk of addiction or side effects.  This may lead to a speedier recovery.  It may also mean a faster return to their normal everyday routine.  Sometimes the chiropractor will suggest exercises that may help to strengthen the muscles that support the injured joint.
