Are You Triggering Your Sciatic Pain?

By Sara Butler

Sciatic pain can literally be a huge pain in the behind. That's because your sciatic nerve runs from your lower back all the way down the back of both legs. If you're experiencing sciatic pain and you're not sure why, there are some triggers lurking in your lifestyle that may be the cause. Here are a few behaviors and habits that can irritate your sciatic nerve and cause symptoms which, by the way, usually only affect one leg.

Wearing Uncushioned Shoes or High Heels

Uncushioned shoes and high heels are a common sciatic trigger. That's because they offer no assistance to your body in mitigating the forces you generate as you walk and stand throughout the day; they put a lot of stress and strain on the joints in your legs and hips, which puts more stress and strain on your sciatic nerve too.

High heels are also a double whammy because they throw off your natural center of gravity as they push your weight forward. You may unconsciously try to correct this by flexing your hips to steady yourself, irritating the sciatic nerve in the process.

Wearing a Wallet or Smartphone in Your Back Pocket

Sitting for a long period of time is tough on your lower back, but it's even tougher on the structures in your lower back (such as the sciatic nerve) if you sit unevenly with a wallet or phone in your back pocket. Pressing any hard object on your buttocks can irritate the sciatic nerve, causing pain in your lower back and all the way down your leg. Do yourself a favor, take everything out of your pockets before sitting. Maybe try a standing desk.

Tight Clothing

If you love form-fitting pants, then you may have to find a new style to love. That's because tight jeans and other tight clothing that presses on your lower body can be a trigger for sciatic nerve pain by compressing the sciatic nerve. It may be time to bring baggy fashions back in to give your sciatic nerve a little more breathing room!

If you're experiencing sciatic nerve pain and you're not sure why, visiting the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic may be your first step to find out what's going on. If there are no underlying medical issues causing your pain, then it may be one of these lifestyle triggers. Look at the bright side, even if you love super skinny jeans, at least if you are in pain you'll know why and you can graduate to simply skinny jeans instead.
