How to Make Healthier Family Meals
By Brandi Goodman
Healthy meals are essential for your whole family. Not everyone has the time or the money to put together big, fancy meals that feel adequate. You don't have to go all out though. Just do what you can to make healthier family meals you can all enjoy together.
Start With Small Substitutions
Big changes all at once are hard to stick with over time. You should start by making small substitutions at a time so you can grow accustomed to them. Buy wheat bread instead of white. Skip the salt. Try making a burger with lettuce to hold it together instead of a bun. These small changes can add up to a big difference with your overall health and how you feel.
Cooking together is a great way to get the whole family in the kitchen and thinking about their health. When your kids get to help you make something healthy, they correlate a good family time with nutritious foods. It makes them more likely to choose those options and want to continue participating in the process.
Let Everyone Find a Healthy Recipe to Try
Don't pick out all the recipes on your own and expect the whole family to enjoy them. Instead, let each person find a new, healthy recipe to try. They'll be more likely to want to try it out despite the healthy factor if they get to help decide on making it. Perhaps one can choose a breakfast and another a dinner. Even if you can't do it nightly, allow one person to choose one healthy meal each week.
Switch Out Your Desserts
Lots of people have a sweet tooth. The trick is to switch out some of your sugar-filled, fattening desserts with healthier choices. They'll still satisfy your craving without making you feel guilty. A yogurt parfait can be great for the whole family. Each person can pick out which fruit and nut toppings they want to add and make it to their own liking.
National Family Meals Month arrives in September each year. You don't have to wait for this month to roll around before getting your family together to enjoy nutritious food. Do what you can every month to bring everyone into the kitchen and get them cooking together and learning about the importance of healthy meals. It's the perfect family bonding time.
