How to Fall in Love With Fitness
By Brandi Goodman
Many people hear the word "exercise" and they feel a sense of dread. Physical activity can be difficult for some, and downright cruel for others. However, every person -- no matter their current level of activity -- can learn to fall in love with fitness if they find the right options. It's just a matter of trying some new things and finding the one (or ones) you actually enjoy.
Try Your Childhood Activities
Think back to when you were a kid. You most likely enjoyed getting outside for recess during the school year or being outdoors in the summertime. Whether you preferred jumping rope with your friends, riding bikes, or getting as high as you could on the swings before leaping, try that activity now. Using your favorite childhood activities for exercise can really help you see the fun in it.
Turn Up Your Favorite Tunes
Lifting weights, trying out a fitness video, or doing simple exercises on the floor can all bore you quickly. You have to enjoy what you're doing if you have any hope of sticking with it. Try turning up your favorite tunes while you work out so you're more inclined to enjoy the moment. Walking in place as you listen to some upbeat music can give you the energy you need to continue.
Exercise for the Stress Relief
Lots of people describe weight loss as their goal for exercise. Instead of focusing on this aspect of it, just think about the way you feel after you exercise instead. Stress relief is a common benefit of working out. Physical activity releases endorphins that can help you feel good and put your mind at ease. You'll enjoy exercise more if you realize just how stress-free it can make you feel instead of worrying the entire time about how many calories were burned and whether it helped you lose a pound.
Exercise With a Friend
Maybe you don't like exercising alone. Make friendship the priority instead. Exercise with a friend by going for regular walks together, taking a class, or heading to a nearby court where you can shoot some hoops or volley a ball. You can have fun moving while enjoying some bonding time.
During Physical Fitness and Sports Month in May, get up and try some new activities. You may just find a new favorite hobby. Continue the activity every month thereafter and fall in love with the fitness option that best suits your interests.
