Walking Can Be Cheap and Still Great Exercise
By Tom Herrin
A lot of the time when we think about getting fit, we think about elaborate equipment, 24-hour gyms, or some new program. Sometimes the simplest forms of things are the best. It is hard to beat the success that can be had by walking. Whether it is for a beginner or someone who is trying to maintain some level of conditioning, walking can produce desired effects without any of the high cost or excessive time commitment. It is also generally low stress, easing the impact on bones and joints.
You May Already Have All The Equipment You Need
Walking doesn’t take much. Your checklist will be very small. You will need a location. There are plenty of parks in most communities. If you don’t have a park, you can always start walking on the street, parking lot, or shopping mall. You only need comfortable clothes. If there is any trick here, it will be deciding how warm or cool to dress. Don’t dress too warm or you might become overheated once you start. The biggest investment you may need to make could be shoes. You do need to have shoes that provide good support. There are plenty out there at an affordable price. What you already have may work, but if you walk in shoes with poor support, you will end up in pain.
When you are walking, you don’t need to go any faster than is comfortable. Becoming exhausted is not part of the plan. You want walk at a pace you can keep up for 10 or 15 minutes to start. If you are not there yet, start with five minutes. Walking every day is great, but if you can do it even three times per week, you will see results.
Socialize And Get Rid Of Stress
If you are having trouble getting started walking, get a friend or family member to go with you. You will enjoy the companionship and conversation. Before very long, you will not even realize how much you walk. Your mind will be occupied and you will likely pace yourself better together. Whether walking alone or with someone, walking can be a great stress reliever. Once you get into a routine, you will look forward to getting out and going for a regular walk. With all this in mind, what are you waiting for? Why not start walking today?
