How About Adding Some Simple Activities to Your Life?
By Tom Herrin
Most people get too busy to have much real recreation that is low-keyed. For people with families, they often find themselves looking for something for their children to do to keep them occupied or get them ready to win a college scholarship in some sport or other activity. Much of that time and effort may be lost in trying to get the jump on someone else. Activities that can be done with adults and children become lost in the shuffle, and there is little time to build relationships among family members. A pretty good game that may have been forgotten for many people is croquet.
Spending Time Outdoors Together is Invaluable
People spend too much time inside with too many gadgets and too much artificial light. While these things have their place, they also have their limits. Getting outdoors and taking in some natural light while getting some exercise can provide amazing benefits. Natural light can help with our internal clocks and better sleep. The outdoors also have a great effect on our moods. It can be a real help in reducing the incidence of depression, which is a major factor in most people’s health.
Mental Abilities Can Be Improved
There is a great need for all people to use their minds. Using some mental strategies to play the game of croquet can be challenging without becoming frustrating. There are angles to consider and various scenarios to keep in mind each time the ball is played. The hand-eye coordination required is another plus. Just how hard or soft to hit a ball can be challenging but can require skill at the same time.
Social Opportunities Abound
A good thing about playing a game such as croquet is that age or physical ability differences are not a factor among players; kids and grandparents can play together. It can be a great game for families because even the smallest members can participate. The rules can also be modified to accommodate any needs. There is nothing wrong with playing the game on an outing as a date or with a group. It leaves plenty of opportunity for conversation, and there is no time limit to be concerned about. You can play one game or a series. If you are looking for something inexpensive, simple, and portable as an activity, you might try croquet. You will probably like it more than you remembered -- and you'll probably feel great afterward.
