Pedaling A Bike Can Increase Bone Density

By Tom Herrin

Exercise is a little like the weather, everyone talks about it, but a lot of people don’t do anything about it.  They worry when they check their overall physical condition or maybe when they look at charts and see just where they fall.  That may be when it hits home that they are in need of a little change of routine.  Exercise may be the dreaded evil that they have been avoiding.  This may seem to be the norm, but some kinds of exercise can actually be enjoyable.  Once they find it, people tend to see physical improvement without all the extreme stress in a workout.  When people hear the expression that something is as easy as riding a bicycle, it generally means that there is not a lot of hard work involved.  Riding a bicycle can really be a great way of achieving activity and improving overall health.

It is Low Impact and Great for Joints

Many people look for low impact activities.  Particularly as they age, low impact is important.  This means that the beating the joints take, many times, is eliminated.  People can get a good workout with little or no impact on the joints.  This literally means they will last longer and cause fewer problems.  The natural aftereffect of this is that they will want to be more active.  It is a beneficial circle.

It Can Strengthen The Heart

Riding a bicycle is usually considered an aerobic exercise.  That means it builds endurance through steady exercise without being overly intense.  This improves the function of the heart in supplying the body.  The veins and arteries can increase in flexibility which generally improves blood pressure.  Moving more blood with less effort is the primary goal of aerobic exercise.

It Can Increase Bone Density

Any activity in which the body exerts force, such as pedaling, can help to strengthen bones.  Increasing bone density is a major concern of many people as they age.  This helps to protect from the dangers involved in falls and other accidents.  Riding a bicycle can be more enjoyable than you may remember.  It is relatively low cost and easy to do.  There is not much learning for most people.  All they have to do is pick up where they left off some years ago.  If you feel as if you need exercise but just can’t wrap your arms around it, try riding a bicycle.
