Sunlight Counts in Short Days, Also
By Tom Herrin
Whether or not we think it is the case, it is just as important to get sunlight when the days are short as when they are long and bright. The sun plays a critical role in preserving and promoting good health. If we fail to take advantage of it, we may be accepting our own loss. That is, if we know that sunlight can provide us with some essential needs, we should seek to include as much as we possibly can anytime we can. That fact is that is one thing that may be the easiest to add to our daily routine.
The Sun Can Boost the Immune System
It is pretty well known that the sun plays a role in a good immune system. This happens in a couple of ways. It is the primary source of Vitamin D. This vitamin helps to build strong bones and combat inflammation. It also is recognized for its ability to fight some cancers such as those of the prostate, breast, lungs, colon, and more. Sunlight also helps to ignite T cells. These cells help to identify and fight disease.
The Sun Provides Energy
When the sunlight strikes the eye, it stimulates the brain to increase the metabolism. It also can turn off the production of melatonin which helps us sleep. A sudden burst of sunlight through a window can, therefore, serve as a great way to wake people up and keep them awake by providing a rush of energy. If you are trying to wake up the kids, it is one of the best things to do. If you are wanting to wake yourself up, simply throw open the shades. You will find tat is hard to sleep after that.
Keep Sunlight in Your Plan
It didn't take long for me to realize that I don't function well without natural light. I have found that it makes me much happier and better able to get anything done. Especially in winter, when the days are short and skies tend to be gray, I discovered that anytime I can have a lot of windows open, or spend time outside, I can feel the difference. At times, it seems like night and day difference. As a result, I do everything I can to take in light each day as part of my daily routine.
