Easy Ways to Lower Sugar in a Kid's Diet

By Genevieve Cunningham

It seems as though the more we learn about sugar, the worse it is. While we once ate sugar relatively guilt-free, we are now bombarded with a million reasons why we should ditch the sweet goodness. But this is easier said than done. And one of the toughest places to eliminate sugar? In the diet of your children. Kids are used to the sweet flavor, and it can be tough to get their tastebuds turned around. If you’d like to get a little sugar out of your kids’ diets, take a look at these quick tips.

Cut the Presweetened Cereal

We all know that the sweet stuff is the best. Fruit Loops, Cocoa Puffs, Lucky Charms … we love them all! But, if you want to eliminate a bit of sugar, this is a great place to start. Instead of opting for these sweet options, buy the plain old cereal. Cheerios, Corn Flakes, Wheaties … these make healthier, sugar-free options to get your kids started off on the right foot each day.

Skip the Soda and Juice

If your kids are used to sodas and juice all day, it will be tough to wean them off, but it will be worth it. Both of these drinks are packed full of sugar. They can lead to poor dental health, excess weight, and addiction in some cases (caffeinated sodas). Instead, offer them more water or milk. This will be better for their teeth and bones as well as their overall health. If you’re having a hard time making the switch, start them out slow. Eliminate one soda or juice a day until their drink choices are better all day long.

Choose Healthy Snacks

After a long day, it’s a lot easier to reach for the Little Debbie than it is to make a healthy snack. But most prepackaged snack foods are also packed with sugar. Instead, keep easily accessible finger foods available. Baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, grapes, cheese wedges, and pretzels all make healthier, sugar-free snacks that are quick and easy. If your child has two or three snacks per day, this one switch might make a big difference.

Is sugar the worst thing in the world? Probably not. But it’s definitely worth cutting back and eliminating whenever possible. Use these tips to cut back on your children’s sugar intake and to get them set up on a healthier lifestyle and diet.
