How to Make Time for Yourself When You Have No Time

By Genevieve Cunningham

Everyone needs time for themselves. We spend so much time doing things for everyone else -- whether it's working or helping or raising our families. We need time to unwind and decompress. We need time to be alone. But for many adults, alone time just isn't possible. If this is you, take a look at these little ways to make time for yourself when you seem to have no time left.

Sip a Hot Drink

For some people, the only time they have to themselves is right when they wake up or right before they go to bed. If this is you, take the time to be alone with your thoughts. Grab a hot drink -- whatever kind soothes your soul -- and sip for a few minutes. Walk outside or sit in a quiet room or just stand in the kitchen in the silence. This allows you to wake up or wind down depending on the time of day, and gives you a few minutes to be completely with yourself.

Read Something for You

How often do you have the chance to read? Probably not very often. If you need time for yourself, pick some content and read a little bit every day. It might be a blog that speaks to you. It might be one page from a book. Just make sure it's something that you want and need to read, and make sure that those precious few seconds stay completely yours.

Turn Off the Noise

Our lives are surrounded by noise. TV sets and phones and notifications and people. It's impossible to make true time for yourself when there's constant noise around you. Try shutting out the noise, even if it's only for five minutes per day. Turn off the ringer, close yourself in a room, and just be in the quiet for a while. Even if it feels awkward at first, you may soon find that the peace and quiet is your favorite part of the day.

It's really important to remember yourself in all the chaos of life. You have to make time for yourself in order to stay mentally well. Use these tiny little tricks to sneak in personal time. With some work and creativity, you can make yourself a small priority even on days when there's no time left.
