Finding Balance: Can You Save Your Health?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Balance is a necessity in life. When we usually think about balance, we think of physical balance. We think of doing an exercise without falling over or standing on one foot without the typical dance that comes with trying to stay upright. But balance has a lot of definitions. It's more than holding weight appropriately in your body; it's also maintaining time, energy, and focus for the different parts of your life. And truthfully, this may be the hardest -- and most important -- balance of all. If you want to save your health and happiness, take a look at these tips for finding balance in your life starting now.

Finding Balance at Home

Finding balance at home can be difficult, but it's absolutely necessary. Home is supposed to be our safe space. It's supposed to be comforting, and if we don't set boundaries, we'll be overwhelmed in our own home. So how do we find balance at home? We can try some of these tips:

  • Leave work at work - It's tempting to take work home so that you can get ahead - or even so you can stay caught up! But don't fall into this trap. Leave work at work where it belongs so that you can enjoy your personal time once you get home.

  • Set boundaries - Your home is yours. It doesn't belong to your mom, your friends, or anyone else. Set boundaries that make sense to you and keep you grounded and happy. It's the only way to maintain your health and sanity.

Finding Balance at Work

Finding balance at work can be even more difficult than home. There are so many demands on our time and energy while we're on the clock. But it can be done! If you want more balance at work, take a look at these tips:

  • Take every break - It can be tempting to just work through your breaks to get more done. You'll look more productive, right? But you won't be setting healthy boundaries. Take breaks. Walk outside. Get a snack. You're not a slave. Take time for yourself to reset and relax so that you can keep your health intact.

  • Go home - Don't work extra. Don't try to cram in more work after hours. Go home. Work the time you're supposed to work, and then be done. Your life is not your job. Find balance by leaving your job on time for the rest of your life waiting for you.

Maintaining Balance Long-Term

Balance is a long-term project. You won't figure it out today. You'll still occasionally take your work home. You'll forget about your boundaries at home and live in chaos. But if you remember about balance, you can stop, reset, and deliberately move back toward balance and health. Use these tips to get moving in the right direction, and get started on a life of balance, peace, and long-term wellness.
