How to Avoid the Extra Fat Around the Middle

By Genevieve Cunningham

The spare tire, the muffin top, the love handles. All of these slang terms mean the same thing … extra fat around the middle. Most people have a few pounds that settle around the midsection, and most people have a great desire to get rid of it. Apart from being frustrating for appearances, extra fat around the middle may be bad for your health. Take a look at these ways to avoid gaining that excess weight, or for those who already have a few pounds, some great ways for getting rid of it.

Skip the Excess Sugar

It’s been suggested that excessive amounts of sugar contribute to weight gain around the middle. And numerous research studies have backed up this suggestion over the years. If you want to avoid the dreaded spare tire, focus on cutting back on your sugar intake. You don’t have to completely give it up, but you should definitely monitor how much you eat every day. Stop with the prepackaged sweets, sodas, and delicious pastries, and you’ll likely notice a slight difference in the squishiness of your midsection.

Lower Your Stress Levels

Stress produces a hormone called cortisol. You’ve probably heard of it before. While a little bit of this hormone is unlikely to hurt your body, large amounts of cortisol are detrimental to your health in multiple ways. Over the years, researchers have specifically linked cortisol to belly fat. The conclusion? The higher your stress levels, the higher your chance of developing belly fat along with numerous other ailments. To lower stress levels, participate in stress reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, walking, or whatever works for you.

Clean Up Your Diet

One way to keep belly fat at bay is to lower your overall body fat percentage. While exercise can certainly help in this area, the most benefit will come from a healthy diet. The cleaner your diet, the more lean your body will be. Stick to fruits and veggies, lean meats, and whole grains. Skip the white foods, processed junk, and fried goodies as much as possible, and you’ll already be on the path to a better diet and flatter stomach.

Some people gain in the middle before they gain anywhere else. Even though this can be frustrating, it does not mean you’re doomed to a life of muffin tops and a squishy midsection. It just means that you have to be cautious and proactive! Use these tips to lose or prevent the dreaded midsection fat, and focus on keeping the body of your dreams intact for years to come.
