Busy Kids and Better Health: Tips for Finding Balance

By Genevieve Cunningham

Kids are a ton of fun. They keep us moving and busy almost all of the time. And as parents, we love it! But how do we know when they're doing enough? When being busy becomes detrimental to their health? And how do we help them find the balance? If you want to help your kids stay busy but also be as healthy as possible, take a look at these tips for finding balance in everyday life.

Focus on Good Sleep

Busy kids absolutely need good sleep. All kids need good sleep, but with a busy lifestyle, it becomes even more important. Start by setting a bedtime for your kids. This will be highly dependent on their age, but set what is appropriate for them. Then help them create a wind down routine that helps them feel sleepy at the day's end. If you start prioritizing sleep now, it will be easier to show your kids its importance as they get older and are on their own.

Teach Them Good Habits

If you let kids, they'll often choose to do it all. They'll want to try dance and gymnastics and soccer and basketball -- and all at the same time if they have to! Kids have to be taught balance. They have to be taught how to choose and say no. Teach your kids to choose one or two activities, and then teach them the very helpful skill of saying no. Not only will this habit help them when they're young, but it will turn into a valuable skill they'll need as they get older.

Watch for Signs of Burnout

Kids don't understand burnout the way that adults do. Oftentimes, kids who are too busy will begin to burn out without even knowing it. It's our job to watch out for the signs. So what should we watch for? Kids who are too busy may become overly sleepy or irritable. They may suffer from insomnia or the inability to concentrate. They may withdraw from family and friends. Basically, watch out for any changes in your child's behavior and take the necessary steps to help them slow down and get rid of stress.

Kids should be busy. They should be involved so that they can learn and grow as much as possible. But it's also important to find balance! Use these tips to help your kids find the balance between a busy life and better health so that they can enjoy life for years to come.
