Easy Ways to Control Sugar Cravings
By Sara Butler
Sugar cravings are nothing new. In fact, many people crave sugar every day and that can make it difficult to stick to a healthy eating plan. The sugar you crave works as a sort of reward for your brain. Your body doesn’t need it to be healthy, but it does want it and when you give in, it’s easy to overindulge. Here are a few tips to help you control your sugar cravings.
When You’re Hungry, Have Something Filling
There is a difference between a craving and hunger -- and it’s a difference that’s important to understand. A craving is not your body’s signal that it needs foods for energy, it’s your brain asking you to give it something that releases hormones that make you feel good. That’s why having a craving hit when you’re actually hungry makes it hard to resist.
One of the best tricks to employ when a craving strikes in the midst of actual hunger is to indulge as soon as you can in a healthy meal. You should work to stock your kitchen with healthy foods, snacks, and prepped meals. Make sure the foods on hand are high in protein since that will help you to feel fuller for longer.
Hot showers and baths can help you find relief when a craving strikes. It may sound a little crazy at first, but if you shower under water hot enough so it’s on the verge of being uncomfortable and stay under the spray for a few minutes, you’re likely to lose your craving along the way. Think of how you feel when you get out of a hot tub -- slight dazed -- and you’ll understand how a hot shower might just be a helpful tool to help curb your cravings!
Go for a Walk
If all you can think about is a chocolate bar, a great way to distract yourself from your craving is to get a little exercise. Go outside when the weather permits and put some distance between yourself and your craving. Exercise releases endorphins that help turn off the craving. It’s a good tool for your craving toolbox.
If you give in every once in a while and indulge in a sweet treat without losing sight of your overall health and fitness goals, then there’s nothing wrong with indulging. But if your cravings are getting in the way of achieving your goals, then you must find ways to help curb them.
