Exploring Alternative Fitness Options During Holidays
By Brandi Swieter
The holidays turn into a major slump for some people, with too much to do and too much food to eat. It leaves many people wanting nothing more than to curl up at home and avoid going out for a while. Doing so, however, can lead to excessive weight gain and even depression. It is far better to keep up a fitness routine and keep the body active. Those who wish to try something new to help get them out of their current slumps can explore alternative fitness options during the holidays.
Water Aerobics
Many people swim during the summer months when they can head outdoors to a pool or beach. Water aerobics classes are actually offered in many gyms and fitness centers, providing a unique way to get in some fitness during the holiday months or any time of year. It’s an ideal option because many people do not feel as though they’re working out. Instead, it’s a fun activity that gets the body working without having to break a sweat.
Skiing, Ice Skating, Snowboarding
While snow may not be available throughout California, there are places that offer indoor winter fitness activities that people can enjoy. Ice skating is possible in many locations throughout the winter months at indoor rinks. It’s a great way to burn calories while having some typical winter fun. Those who prefer to ski or snowboard can travel to be able to do so. Countless resorts and ski lodges exist throughout many states, providing a relaxing, yet active trip for those who want to get in some fitness time.
Shopping
The holiday months are often spent shopping anyways, so why not make it a bit more active? Make a shopping plan to get in a full day’s worth of fitness. Put on a pair of tennis shoes and take every set of stairs you find. Also be sure to walk all over the mall rather than sticking to a few main stores. The more walking and shopping gets done, the more calories burned.
Staying fit during the holidays doesn’t have to be hard. Find some fun activities to enjoy and get in a workout you might have otherwise not received if you didn’t try something new. While some locations are available in town and nearby, some traveling may have to be involved to do other activities on the list. Those planning on traveling to snowy states to visit family will have an even better chance to explore some alternative fitness solutions.
