Board Games Can Sharpen Your Mind/Improve Your Health
By Tom Herrin
Winter has its own unique effect on most of us. Unless you live on an island in the tropics, there is a good chance that winter keeps you inside more. That can be a good thing. I know for me, when the time changes every year, I tend to leave a lot of outside activities behind. When this happens it is not a total loss. It can be a great time to pull out the board game. The what, you're asking?! There used to be something called board games. They were actually kind of fun. People sat around and calculated a little strategy while carrying on a conversation. Imagine what might happen if you tried that today. It might just surprise you.
Improve Cognitive Skills
Playing board games can actually have several kinds of positive effects on us. Many of the games require making decisions based on situations, and chess is not the only one. Analytical skills are often used to evaluate moves and circumstances. These games have proved to sharpen our response time as we play them more. There is growing evidence that many forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, have their effects lessened by participating in activities such as these as memory can improve. The brain seems to work much like the muscles when being exercised.
Health May Actually Be Positively Affected
As many of us probably realize, there is some benefit from playing board games that causes relaxation. Our minds seem to change gears as we become involved in the game. Blood pressure can be lowered. Almost anytime our stress level is reduced, our immune system becomes more efficient. That is believed to be the case here as well.
This is an Activity that Can Help the Whole Family
Probably the best advantage to playing board games is that everyone can play. Children love the opportunity to interact with parents in a constructive way. They can develop both their social skills and their mental abilities by playing. As well, those chemicals in our body that make us feel good are released. It is difficult to have stress in family relations when members feel good about each other. If you want to do something good for yourself and your family, go in there and dust off the Monopoly box. When it comes to playing board games, everyone really can be a winner!
