Is Better Health Your Objective?

By Tom Herrin

Anytime people set out to get into a good program of exercise, there are some important questions that they should possibly be asking themselves.  What do they expect to gain from their efforts is a good question to ask.  Another it just how much time can they carve from an already busy schedule.  Answering these early may help to avoid some unnecessary frustration as they attempt to shape their life activities around it.  In reality, they may be able to achieve much of what they desire in the way of good health without excessive time requirements.  This may still allow adequate time in their schedule for those many other things they feel the need to work in.

For Runners, How Much Is Enough?

The common notion about running often seems to be that if they don't get in 30 minutes or more, they have wasted their time.  And there may be a certain feeling of reward when they put in this kind of time.  Studies have shown that this may not actually be necessary.  According to information from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, people who run for 10 minutes per day on a daily basis may be able to reduce their chances of death from heart disease by as much as 45 percent.  This is a minimal commitment of time for pretty good results.

More Moderate Exercise May Put a Smile on Your Face

Being happy is important in whatever people do.  A Japanese study of people who rode a stationary bike for 10 minutes per day regularly found that participants were overall happier.  They also performed well on tasks that required some coordination and reaction time.  It would seem that mental skills were in good order.  When people are happy, they are often better able to perform physically.  Happy and healthy seem to go together well.

Evaluate and Decide

Planning may make the biggest difference in the success of programs.  When we need to save time, we can easily be more successful at it by planning ahead.  Knowing what we want to achieve can help us to formulate a vision that will get us there.  Goals work better when they are spelled out.  We can then see if we are really getting to our destination.  If staying healthy while allowing more time in a schedule is something on your list, you can do it
