Which Fat Do You Prefer?

By Tom Herrin

Some things affect all of us.  One of those is fat.  While some of us seem to have little to worry about by their appearance, the truth is that fat may be much less obvious than we think.  Even those who appear really fit may have some unseen issues with fat.  There is more than one way to look at fat in terms of how it may affect our bodies.  Many of us have concerns about the way we look in terms of our personal weight.  Looking at the way our clothes fit is one way of judging that.  Another concern many have is how much fat we are consuming from the food we eat.  We may monitor this by keeping tabs on labels and menus.  In order to evaluate fat, we need to have as much information as possible.

Fat in a Diet Is Debatable

There are quite a few differences in how people view the fat in the foods they eat.  Modern diet plans are all over the map.  For many years, some have advocated for diets that are low in fat.  This was to avoid having us take in fats that could cause problems.  Some of these fats are known to raise cholesterol.  In more recent times, some have proposed that diets that are high in fats and low in carbs can help us by shifting the way our bodies work in burning calories.

Our Bodies Require Some Fats

Some parts of our bodies need fat for those parts to work well.  The most significant may be the brain.  It must contain some fat to be healthy.  Fat is needed around several of the organs to help cushion and protect them.  The nerves and bone marrow each need fat as well.  Some kinds of fat help to store vitamins and some help to regulate temperature.

We May Measure Fat

For those who are concerned, we now have ways to help monitor the amount of fat on our bodies.  This is done by one of several methods, but the one that is easiest is to use a BMI calculator.  This gives us an approximate idea of the amount of fat we have on our bodies by using our age, frame size, weight, and height.  It is not really exact but gives us an idea.  The more we know about our fat, the better we can use the information to keep us healthy.
