Smart Ways to Back Up Your Back
By Sandy Schroeder
Sometimes it’s easy to just surge ahead. There’s a lot to do, and somehow we make it all happen. The house needs cleaning. Work is calling, and there will be more to do at home later. If this sounds a lot like your day, you may be putting your back at risk in the process.
Check these prevention tips from Harvard Health.
Make Your Workplace Work for You – If you spend a lot of hours sitting, everything should be a custom fit. Start with your desk, putting everything within easy reach with no twisting needed. Then make sure your chair adjusts to provide good back and lumbar support, and your feet are flat on the floor. Computer monitors should be at eye level.
Work Carefully At Home – When you are lifting or toting children or groceries, keep everything close and lift with your legs. Never bend from the waist. Be careful vacuuming, gardening or moving baby equipment. Do stretches throughout the day to keep your body limber.
When You Travel Keep It Light – In the air or on the road, choose the right totes, cases and bags to carry only what you need. Bags should never be more than 10 percent of your body weight. When you drive, make sure your back and neck are supported. Stay focused and do shoulder rolls to relieve tension. Take frequent breaks to walk and stretch.
Sleep Well – Check your mattress to avoid lumpiness, and get the right firmness. Pick pillows that keep the head even with the spine. Feather pillows are often the best choice. Sleep on your side or your back, and consider sleeping with a pillow between your legs to take the pressure off of the spine if you go the side route.
See Your Chiropractor for More Support – Stop by The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you to meet a dedicated staff of licensed chiropractors, who are well equipped to help you with your back.
If you have painful twinges in your back, your chiropractor will help you seek pain relief without using pain medications or surgery. At the same time, your chiropractor will help you maximize wellness with ongoing monitoring, tips and adjustments.
