3 Ways to Improve Your Focus First Thing

By Genevieve Cunningham

Attention span. What a funny little thing that we all have to deal with. When we’re young, we’re told our attention spans are too short, but that we’ll gain better control as we get older. For a brief period in our lives … older teens to young adult … we may even see a slight improvement in how long we can pay attention. But it doesn’t take long to see this span of time diminish. Focus seems to come and go like the tide, except we never know when it’s on the way out or in. If you need a little more focus in your life, check out these quick and easy additions to your morning routine that are sure to make a difference.

Drink Lemon Water

Adding a little lemon to a cup of hot water is a great way to boost both your body and your mind for the day. Lemon has a way of boosting your energy as well as your concentration. Along with this, it will also give you a healthy dose of Vitamin C for your daily intake. Give this method a try for a week or so to see if it makes a difference. Over time, you’ll likely find your concentration coming back little by little.

Exercise First

This is so hard for a lot of people. The last thing that you feel like doing after rolling out of bed is exercising, but this can be one of the most beneficial and effective ways to get your mind moving. As soon as your feet hit the floor, start a quick stretching routine and do some low impact cardio or light weights. This gets your blood flowing, your muscles tense, and allows any stress to leave your body before the day begins. It might take a while to get used to this one, but it definitely works if you just stick with it.

Don’t Reach for the Phone

While technology brings a ton of good into our lives, it can actually cause our brains to ramp up before being ready. Have you ever felt slightly foggy in the brain or a bit confused after finally getting off of your phone or laptop? Yeah … it’s because your brain has been stimulated for hours! Give it a rest! When you first wake up, don’t reach for any sort of technological device. Instead, turn on some comforting or soothing music, and check your phone after you’ve already been up for a while.

We could all use a little more focus in our lives. No matter how old you are or what your job is, paying attention is often a chore. If you want to improve your concentration, just use these methods every morning. With some patience and persistence, you can build your tolerance and gain back your focus like never before.
