Are You Struggling with Muscle Spasms?

By Sara Butler

Muscle spasms in your back are just not fun. They’re painful and can put you out of commission for a while. There are many things that may be contributing to the back spasms you’re experiencing. Here are some of the most common reasons for muscle spasms in your back, and how your chiropractor can help you to find relief!

What is a Muscle Spasm?

When the muscle tissue in your back contracts and doesn’t release it can cause a painful spasm. They usually occur in the lower back and should be taken as a sign from your body that something just isn’t right. When a muscle spasm hits, you should immediately stop what you’re doing – but you honestly may not have a choice since they can be so bad they can drop you to the floor! So, take muscle spasms in your back seriously and look at them as an indication of a much larger problem you need to speak to your chiropractor about.

What Causes a Back Spasm?

You can normally narrow down the causes of a back spasm to a couple of things, such as:

  • Protection mechanism – Sometimes the muscles in the back contract in order to protect it. If you’ve strained or injured a muscle or other soft tissue, then a spasm is your body’s way of protecting itself.
  • Underlying problem – Sometimes, an underlying anatomical problem is the culprit, such as a herniated disc, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis. You need to be diagnosed as soon as possible in the event it’s a medical problem so that treatment can begin.

Treatment

Treating muscle spasms in the back can be simple to treat, depending on the reason behind it. If it’s due to injury then the first step is to treat inflammation. This is normally done through ice therapy. Just make sure whatever you do that you attempt light stretching and moving since staying still for long periods can actually make the problem even worse. They may find that chiropractic adjustments are necessary to treat any underlying dysfunction or restriction in order to help you heal.

You don’t have to suffer through painful muscle spasms alone because your chiropractor is here to help. See them as soon as possible in the event of a muscle spasm so that they may determine what caused it and help get you back on the road to wellness.
