Foods You Should Stop Buying

By Sara Butler

You may not be eating as healthy as you think you are. Sure, you go to the store and load up on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and proteins, but even if you’re going nowhere near the junk food aisle, you may not be doing as well as you think. There are some food mistakes that don’t seem like food mistakes at all. In an effort to be healthier, these are some of the foods you need to avoid buying at the store.

Canned Vegetables

OK – canned vegetables will work during the zombie apocalypse when you have no other choice, but in a world full of fresh vegetables (especially the dark green kind) you don’t need anything out of a can. That’s because canned vegetables often have a lot of sodium and have been stripped of a lot of their fiber. Some even have added preservatives, flavorings, or sugar – and you may not even know it.

If you want to save money and fresh vegetables won’t work for your pocketbook, then go with frozen vegetables. They’re just as healthy as the fresh produce because they’re frozen at their peak. They have all the nutrition without the added ingredients of canned vegetables.

Canned Baked Beans

Continuing on with “nothing good comes out of a can” brings you to baked beans. Unlike other beans from a can (the lower sodium variety anyway), baked beans often have a ton of sugar and sodium added. Plus, why buy when you can easily make a healthy version at home with less sugar and salt and for cheaper?

Fruit Drinks

Those processed fruit smoothies may look like they’re great for you, but just because they say superfood on the label doesn’t make it true. These juices are loaded with added sugar and artificial sweeteners, amounting to empty calories that won’t leave you feeling satisfied.

Part of what makes fruit so good for you is the fiber it contains, but fruit juices have all the fiber stripped, so you’re much better off going with a whole piece of fruit rather than any kind of fruit juice.

Red Meat

Red meat such as beef, lamb, and pork is high in saturated fat and cholesterol. So, while it’s great that you’re adding protein to your diet, you have to realize that not all protein is created equal.

To get your protein you should look for other sources such as chicken, fish, and turkey. You can even go with non-meat sources for protein such as quinoa, nuts, and seeds.
