Holiday Shopping Survival Guide

By Sara Butler

Trying to get through all your holiday shopping without feeling as if you were run over by a dazzle of zebras? How your legs and feet survive all that walking and waiting in line isn't that difficult. There are some simple yet effective things you can do to give yourself the gift of comfortable holiday shopping this year. Here are a few tips to help get you started from the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.

Tips No. 1: Wear Good Shoes

You may not be gearing up to run a marathon, but you are going to go on a marathon shopping spree, so prepare yourself by choosing the right footwear. Sure, your high heel boots are cute, but they're not going to comfortably take you around the mall. You must choose a shoe that is comfortable. Here are a few more things to be aware of with your footwear choice:

  • If you struggle with bunions or blisters, choose a shoe with a wide toe box
  • If you have low or high arches, wear shoes that provide proper arch support
  • Avoid material that doesn't allow your feet to breathe, such as faux leather

Tip No. 2: Consider Your Socks

Some people need a little extra circulation boost when they're going to be on their feet all day and you can find that extra support in compression socks. Compression socks or stockings can help to reduce swelling, minimize the risk of blood clots, and support your leg muscles. You're on your feet all day, so help your body out!

Tip No. 3: Take Frequent Breaks

At least once an hour you should take a break. Sit down, stretch out a little, and perhaps take some of your purchases out to the car so you're not carrying around a lot of extra weight. Also, remember to periodically shift the side you're carrying your purchases on so you don't throw off your body's center of gravity so much -- that will help your legs and feet to feel better at the end of a long shopping day.

Tip No. 4: Drink Water!

Step away from the eggnog and eggnog-flavored coffee and make sure you drink enough water when you're out and about. You may not feel as if you're exercising, but all that walking certainly is exercise. Staying properly hydrated will help you to feel better when you're done with all that gift buying!

You may not consider shopping a sport, but maybe you should in order to stay healthy this holiday season!
