Your Goals for Eating Healthy

By Sara Butler

Eating healthy isn't as difficult as you think it is. If you can take a few small steps each week to improve how you eat and create a healthier eating plan, then better health will follow. Here are a few healthy changes that are easy to make and stick with that can make a big difference in your health.

Load Up on Fruits and Vegetables

When you create a plate, half of it should be piled high with fruits and vegetables. Make sure to choose foods that are many different colors. Red tomatoes, green broccoli, orange sweet potatoes -- healthy eating means eating the rainbow.

You can also add fruit as a dessert at the end of the meal. Combining fruits and vegetables at each meal can help your body get all the vitamins, minerals, and fiber it needs to be healthier.

Go Whole Grain

An easy way to ensure you get more whole grains in your diet is to make half of the grains you eat of the whole variety. That means opting for more whole wheat bread instead of the white kind, or brown rice instead of white. Choose things that have whole grains at the top of the ingredients list and you'll be set.

Learn to Love Lean Protein

Protein is a big part of a healthy diet, but the type of protein you choose is very important to your health. Lean proteins such as turkey, chicken, or lean (90 percent or better) grass-fed ground beef are what you should be opting for. You can also eat seafood, eggs, seeds, nuts, and peas to add a punch of protein to your daily diet.

Drink More Water

Instead of reaching for a sugary soda or sweet tea, opt for old-fashioned water instead. If you can cut out the calories in your drinks, then you can make your diet a whole lot healthier without a ton of effort. If you need to kick your water up a notch, consider adding some fruit or herbs, such as lemon and mint, to it. This can help add a little kick without a lot of calories.

Cut Out Bad Fats

It's OK to indulge in a piece of cake, a cookie, or some other dessert every once in a while, but the fats found in these foods are not good for you. These fats are also found in things such as ice cream, pizza, and processed meats such as hot dogs and sausage. These should only be enjoyed in moderation because they're simply not good for your health.
