Cut More Calories With These Easy Tricks

By Genevieve Cunningham

If you’re trying to lose weight, there’s a good chance that cutting calories is necessary. In order to lose, you have to burn more calories than you consume, and cutting calories helps you meet that goal. But sometimes it seems as though cutting calories is tough! Where else can we cut back? What else can we avoid? It feels impossible. Luckily, it’s probably easier than you think. If you’re ready to cut a few more calories from your diet, use these tricks to help make it happen.

Drink Some Water

It doesn’t matter what you’re about to eat -- a huge dinner, a tiny snack -- go ahead and drink a full glass of water first. This can help in a couple of different ways. For starters, drinking a glass of water helps you feel more full. The fuller you feel, the less you eat, and the fewer overall calories you consume. It can also help with digestion, which makes the food move more quickly and efficiently through your body, instead of sitting in your stomach making you feel uncomfortable and bloated. Drink a glass of water, eat, wait. Chances are good that if you’re only trying to cut a small number of calories from your diet, this trick might be enough to get it done.

Don’t Clean Your Plate

You probably grew up being told to clear your plate before you could get up. You had to eat it all, right? Not anymore. If you want to cut calories, make it a goal to not clear your plate. Try to leave a quarter of your main dish and each side dish. If you don’t like the thought of leaving food on your plate, dip your helping and then immediately put a quarter of it back into the main dish. This can cut back on the calorie total with very little effort or self-discipline.

Skip Starchy Side Dishes

Starchy sides -- things such as rice and potatoes -- are quite popular. But they’re also packed full of calories! Do your best to skip these sides whenever possible. Instead, choose the vegetable option. If there aren’t any veggies, skip the sides completely or scoop out only a very tiny amount. This might take a little self-discipline, but it’s a quick and easy way to cut back.

Cutting calories can seem quite the challenge, but it can be a lot easier than you think. Use these tips to get you started. Over time, these will likely become a part of your normal habits, and you’ll be eating less calories without any extra thought or effort. Weight loss and a fit body can be yours, and with a little discipline, you’ll get there in to time.
