Why Weight Loss Shouldn't Be the Only Goal

By Genevieve Cunningham

When it comes to getting fit, many people look to one main goal: weight loss. It seems to be the gold standard of measuring how well your fitness journey is going. The more weight you’ve lost, the better your health. But is this really the way it is? Or do we put an unhealthy emphasis on losing weight? Though weight loss can certainly be a worthy goal, it probably shouldn’t be the only one. If you’re on the journey to better health, take a look at these reasons why you shouldn’t only rely on lost pounds.

Because the Scale Can Be Deceiving

The scale can be a good guide, but sometimes, it can actually be deceiving. When you first begin to exercise, it’s possible that you’ll gain muscle before you drop any fat. When you step on the scale, you may notice that your weight hasn’t budged, or even worse, has gone up a few pounds. This can be discouraging! Instead of worrying over the number, just know that your body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to be doing. The fat will drop, so don’t worry about the scale just yet.

Because Other Measurements May Be More Important

You can change your entire body without ever changing your weight. There are so many other ways to measure success. Try measuring your body -- arms, legs, waist, hips. This number can show great success even when the scale won’t budge. You can also judge your success by how you feel in your clothes or by how much energy you have at the end of your workout. The bottom line is that the scale is not the only measure of success, so don’t be afraid to branch out.

Because Overall Health Matters More

Weight can be an indicator of health, but it’s absolutely not the only indicator. If you can improve circulation, boost metabolism, lower blood pressure, or cut back on medication, then you’re definitely making progress. Overall health matters so much more than the number on the scale. Focus on improving your overall health, and don’t worry about the scale.

Weight loss is hard. It’s tedious. It’s frustrating. But luckily, weight loss isn’t the only problem worth worrying about. Focus on pounds, but don’t be obsessed. Measure your health and your progress in other ways, and you may find that you feel more successful than ever before.
