How to Handle Stress Like a Pro
By Genevieve Cunningham
Stress isn't anything to joke about. Of course, we make plenty of jokes -- things about stress killing us or stress making us sick. Unfortunately, these jokes are often covered in truths. Stress is hard on us! And unfortunately, it's unavoidable. So how are we supposed to deal with something that is both inevitable and also dangerous? We have to learn to manage it. If you need help managing stress and feeling your best, take a look at these tips for handling your stress like a pro.
Some people don't like to be firm because they think it comes across as bossy or mean, but you can be firm and still be nice. If you're maxed out, you have to be firm about what you're willing to do. Say no to more work. Say no to your kids. Tell people that you're taking a day off. Say it and mean it. This might be the key to keeping your stress at a tolerable level. Too many times, we allow stress to pile up and pile up until we can't function. If you're firm, you can manage your stress without allowing it to spin out of control.
Take Your Days Off
Why do we, as Americans, think that we're supposed to work so much? Work is important! But days off are important too. A huge portion of workers don't take their allotted days off -- either because they don't like the thought of missing work, or because they think it will help them get ahead. But don't try to get ahead at the expense of your own mental health. Take your days, and you'll be much better off in the long run.
Learn Coping Mechanisms
We're not going to avoid stress. We're all going to experience it -- every day and for the rest of our lives. So instead of avoiding it, we have to learn how to manage it. Learn deep breathing exercises. Learn mental and physical exercises that keep your stress levels under control. Learning to cope with stress is the way to go for long-term wellness. Ask a professional for a little help and you'll be much better off in the long run.
Stress is going to happen, and that's OK. We're not trying to avoid stress altogether, but rather learn to manage it in a healthy and effective way. Use these tips to handle the stress that comes your way and you'll be able to live a healthier, happier life moving into the future.
