Can You Avoid Disc Problems?

By Sara Butler

Many people are under the impression that back problems, specifically disc problems in the back, are inevitable. Well, they’re not! There’s no question that disc problems are common, and your chiropractor his fair share of them. But there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of developing problems with the discs in your back. Here are a few pointers to get you started in the right direction!

The Importance of Discs

Your spine is an intricate structure, comprised of bones and tiny, spongy structures called discs. These discs act as little cushions between the bones in your spine. They help to keep your spine flexible but also help it to bear its immense load as the center of your entire body. These discs have a tough outer layer and softer inner layer. If the outer layer is damaged and the inner layer begins to bulge or leak out into the area surrounding your spine, then it is called a bulging or herniated disc. If the disc loses its flexibility and shrinks, then this is called disc degeneration.

How to Avoid Disc Problems

There are several things you can do to try and keep your discs healthy and functioning correctly. You can:

  • Assess your lifestyle – Some types of back pain and damage to discs can be reversed or stopped by looking at your day-to-day activities. Do you spend a lot of time sitting or lifting? If so, then you should speak with your chiropractor about what you can do to stay healthy.
  • Practice good posture – Your grandmother wasn’t just trying to annoy you when she reminded you to stand up straight. Good posture is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your back stays healthy, along with the discs in your back.
  • Get your spine aligned – Seeing your chiropractor regularly is important. When your back is in proper alignment then it won’t be subjected to more wear and tear from your daily activities than is necessary.
  • Get active – Exercise is good for your whole body, including your spine! Even if you’re currently experiencing back pain or back problems, it’s a good idea to stay active to help strengthen muscles that support the spine and improve back issues.

Many people seek help from their chiropractor for discs problems, and they know how to help! If you’re having problems with your back, then talk to your chiropractor about it the next time you come into The Joint Chiropractic!
