Chiropractor Says: Watch Your Driving!

By Brandi Goodman

People who spend a considerable amount of time in their vehicles may start noticing some lower back and hip discomfort. It's far too easy to experience pain when you're sitting in a car for an extended period of time during your day. Those with a long commute should especially be wary of their driving habits. Some chiropractic tips can help.

Use Stop Lights to Stretch

Sitting for a long while without ever stretching out your legs or arms can make it easy for aches to set in. Any time you come to a stop light, be sure to stretch as much as you can. Even something as simple as twisting slightly and leaning your neck back can help provide a stretch for your back so it isn't so stiff.

Stop Slouching

Slouching in your seat may feel comfortable for a short time, but your lower back will undoubtedly suffer. Especially as you go over bumps and hit dents in the road, a slouched position will quickly leave you feeling sore. You should always sit up straight while driving and keep your core engaged so any bumps you encounter don't throw your body off balance. You can use a lumbar support pillow behind you to help keep yourself upright.

Keep Water With You

It's always imperative to stay hydrated. If you have a long drive ahead, make sure you have water with you so you can sip from it every now and then. Keeping your joints hydrated can help prevent stiffness and soreness from setting in so easily.

Replace Tires and Shocks Before They Become a Problem

Worn out shocks and tires that are nearly bare will make your ride that much more uncomfortable. You're likely to feel every single bump in the road and get tossed around a lot more often. You need to replace tires and shocks before they have a chance to become a problem. Take note of when they were last replaced and make sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendation for getting new sets.

The longer your drive, the more you should concern yourself with these chiropractic tips. It's wise to prevent any pain that you can so your body doesn't have to suffer. If you still feel an ache coming on, it's best to visit The Joint Chiropractic as soon as possible to get any subluxations or joint restrictions corrected promptly. Drive safe and do better so you can maintain your well-being and make it to your destination pain-free.
