3 Ways to Stay Healthy While Enjoying a Vacation

By Genevieve Cunningham

It doesn't matter how healthy and fit you are, staying healthy on vacation is hard! Why? Because it's vacation! It's time to indulge and let loose. Time to sleep in and enjoy late nights. Most people don't want to think about healthy habits. They want to eat out and skip their workouts and feel spoiled. While taking this route is probably OK on occasion, this frame of mind is sure to leave you 5 pounds heavier, bloated, and out of shape by the vacation’s end. So what can you do? And more importantly, how can you make it easier to stay healthy on vacation? If you need some tips to get you moving in the right direction, take a look at these easy ways to keep your health intact.

Pack Some Food

You're going to go out to eat. That's part of the fun of a vacation! But is it necessary to eat out for every meal and snack? The more you're able to take with you, the more likely you are to shave a few calories off of each meal and lower your daily total. Eat out at dinner, but take a meal replacement or simple sandwich for lunch. Or take your breakfast and snack food … fruits and veggies and such. It takes a little more planning, but when it comes to your health, the extra effort is definitely worth it.

Walk as Much as You Can

In some locations, this may not be possible. But in many destination spots, walking from your hotel to the restaurant or to an activity is incredibly easy. Walking whenever possible allows you to burn some calories without actually working out. This is a great way to keep exercising on your vacation, but in a natural and fun way. Take shoes that allow for walking, plan a little extra time to get to your destination, and enjoy the easy exercise, extra calorie burn, and healthier body that come with a little more movement.

Drink Water

When you're on the move, it's easy to forget to drink water. But if we don't get enough water, we're more likely to become dehydrated, suffer headaches, experience muscle cramps, and suffer from multiple other health problems. When you go out to eat, choose water. At snack time, have a glass of water. Carry a water bottle and sip throughout the day. The more water you drink, the better you'll feel, and the easier it will be to keep your health intact.

Vacation is definitely a time to kick back and relax. It's a time to enjoy yourself and let loose a bit. But it’s not a time to completely disregard your health. Use these tips to manage your health while you’re on vacation, and you may be able to return to real life feeling relaxed, well rested, and healthy, too.
