How to Nourish Yourself

By Sara Butler

So, how are those New Year’s resolutions going? Have you been eating better, exercising, or followed through with any of your healthy living ideas? Well, if you’ve fallen off the resolution wagon, have no fear; there are some changes you can start today that can make you healthier and feel like a million bucks. Here’s what you can start now without feeling deprived or hungry at all!

Drink Water

If you’re feeling less than energized, a bit foggy in the brain, or like your metabolism has become a bit sluggish, then you can easily remedy that with more water! You can use a phone app to help you be more accountable for how much water you’re able to sip throughout the day. There may be more bathroom trips in your future, but there will also be better health!

You can jazz up your water intake by:

  • Adding flavor – You can add fresh muddled herbs or lemon to your water to make it taste better. You can also add oranges, but make sure you peel the skin off citrus before adding it since it can leave a bitter aftertaste.
  • Make your bottle a timer – Put lines on your water bottle to know how much you should drink at certain times of the day. That way you can make a game out of it and challenge yourself to stay on top of your water.
  • Transition triggers – If you have trouble remembering to drink water, then you can make it a habit of taking a drink every time you switch from one activity to another.

Have a Soup or Salad

You should make a commitment to swap out the sandwich you have at lunch with a cup of broth-based soup or change out your pasta for a salad. Soups and salads are delicious and they sneak more vegetables and water into your day. Ultimately, they’ll help you to have fewer calories throughout the day.

Have Clean Snacks

The stuff in the vending machine should be off limits because the only thing you’ll find there are sugar and simple carbohydrate bombs. Instead, keep healthy snacks at your desk to help. Try fruit, sliced vegetables and hummus, nuts, seeds, or string cheese. A snack that will provide you with a punch of protein so you’ll feel satisfied will help you get through the day and not give into temptation.
