Tips to Help Your Kids Be Healthy

As a parent or caregiver, you’re responsible for shaping your child’s life. You provide an environment that encourages health and wellness, teaching them lessons that will shape their entire lives. There are several ways to make this huge responsibility easier on you and get your whole family fit in the process. Here are some tips to help you get started!

Some of the best ways to help a child be healthy include:

  • Be a good role model for activity and healthy eating habits
  • Set limits on screen time
  • Provide a good atmosphere around meals and snacks
  • Avoid excessive regimens for exercise
  • Avoid restrictive diets

The role of a caregiver is the same no matter how large or small the child. Remember, helping your child to reach and maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle is about teaching them healthy behaviors. Teach them how to have fun and be happy in the process!

Be Active Together

Children need 60 minutes of activity each and every day. Make sure to play with your kids each day and try taking them to do family-friendly activities together such as bike rides, walks, frisbee, baseball, or soccer.

Make Meals Special

Eating meals together is very important to happiness and health, and it’s cheaper than eating out too! Make dinners together and then sit down to enjoy them as you discuss the day and plans you may have for the week.

Don’t Use Food as Punishment or Reward

When you forbid a food, you only make your child want it more. So, instead of saying no to sweet treats or other foods that your child wants, limit how much of it they have. Also, make sure not to use food as a reward. It’s far better to use non-food rewards to encourage healthy emotional eating habits.

Eat the Rainbow

Kids can be famously stubborn when it comes to trying new foods. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to introduce new fruits and vegetables to them at every opportunity. Try to come up with fun ways to try new things or pair them with things you know your child enjoys already. Don’t shy away from dips such as peanut butter and hummus to help make some fruits and vegetables more attractive.
