Healthy Habits to Start Today!

By Sara Butler

Shifting your mindset to focus on short-term, small goals is one way you can incorporate healthy habits in your life. If you can master this shift in mindset, then living a healthier lifestyle is within arm's reach, making the larger challenges you want to tackle that much easier. Here are some healthy habits you can easily adopt in your life today. Pick one or two to start and then tackle the rest in order to master your health and wellness.

Get Adequate Sleep

Sleep is important to your overall health. It helps your body to heal and restore, it's vital to the production of hormones, helps you maintain a healthy weight, and even improves your mood. If you aren't getting enough sleep at night, then you simply aren't healthy.

Commit to making sleep a priority in your life by making small changes such as:

  • Putting electronic devices away at least an hour before bed
  • Doing something relaxing leading up to bedtime
  • Getting up at the same time every day (and going to bed at the same time, too)
  • Making your bedroom a sanctuary for sleep

Sleep is free, so there's no excuse not to get enough of it!

Drink More Water

Most people don't drink enough water, yet it's essential to your overall health. Don't allow yourself to get thirsty. Instead, have a refillable water bottle with you at all times that you can sip from constantly. Start your day off with a glass of water too, maybe as you're waiting for your coffee to brew. Sleeping dehydrates the body, so that first cup of water is essential to start the day off right.

Exercise

You know you need to exercise for your health, but do you really get it done? Exercise doesn't have to mean getting up at the crack of dawn for a Rocky Balboa-style montage workout (do not drink raw eggs!). Doing small things such as taking a walk before dinner or taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work can make a big impact. The idea is to get your body moving, not to train like an Olympian -- unless you want to!

Pick a goal to help you get your body moving, such as taking a 20-minute walk four days this week or walking in place during each commercial break of your favorite show. The little things can add up to create big payoffs.
