How to Set Successful Goals

By Sara Butler

When it comes to achieving goals you set for your health and wellness, it can be a lot more complicated than just coming up with things you want to do. In fact, setting goals is the easy part; doing what you must to achieve them is where things get a little dicey. In order to set yourself up for success when it comes to goals, there are some definite dos and don'ts to follow.

Create a Plan

You definitely do want to create a plan instead of thinking that one day you'll get around to it. It's important to think up goals and then create a plan that helps you reach them. You also might come up with a plan B or C to help when you stumble along the way.

Start Small

Another do of goal setting is to start off with small goals. If you try to focus on too many things at once, then you are setting yourself up to become overwhelmed. Something small such as drinking eight glasses of water per day for the next week or getting out of bed without pressing snooze can help you boost your confidence.

Write It Down

There's no point in coming up with goals and a plan to reach them if you're not going to write it down! Give yourself a firm deadline for your goals and harness the power of writing them down to help you remain focused and committed to the things you want to achieve.

Be Specific

A wishy-washy goal won't get much traction, so get specific when you write down what you want to achieve. Leave out language such as "some" or "more" that allows too much wiggle room and go for measurable language in your goal-setting. Just make sure to avoid "always" or "never" since an all-or-nothing attitude might take you down the wrong path.

Don't Expect Perfection

News flash: You're human. As a human you're going to make mistakes, you're going to be led astray, and you're going to stumble as you work toward your goals. The good news is that if you can set goals in a way that allows for potential stumbles, then it'll be less catastrophic to your overall plan when you do. Keep trying -- you'll get it right!

Your goals are important so set yourself up to be as successful as you can!
