How to Boost Your Metabolism With Every Bite

When the body’s metabolism slows down, extra pounds just seem to rush in. Researchers say an adult woman may gain one and a half pounds each year if she doesn’t deal with metabolism, stress, and muscle loss. But Prevention.com tells us staying active and making the right choices can speed up metabolism, helping us look and feel better.

Breakfast Is a Must – Fire up your metabolism with a protein breakfast that will keep you moving all day.

Pick Your Favorite Protein – You may burn 35 percent more calories as you enjoy your choice of nuts, beans, avocado, low fat dairy, fish, chicken or lean meats. Try to include protein at each meal.

Take A Laughter Break – Every time you trade jokes with your friends or giggle through a funny movie you may burn up to 20 percent more calories. Your heart will be happier, too, as your stress levels drop.

Don’t Forget Fiber – Black bean tacos, split pea soup and your choice of asparagus or green beans can all deliver the fiber you need to fight fat. Researchers say fiber can increase fat burning by 30 percent. Try to include three servings of high fiber vegetables and fruits during your day.

Stock Up on Walnuts – Handfuls of walnuts provide polyunsaturated fatty acids that help our systems burn more fats.

Sip Tea or Coffee – Caffeine provides an eight percent stimulant boost and a cup of tea can increase your metabolism by 12 percent. Choose green tea for the most health benefits and enjoy throughout the day.

Jazz Up Your Water – Add berries, cucumbers or lemons to really cold water and try to drink at least 40 ounces of cold water daily. 

Use Iodized Salt – A quarter teaspoon of iodized table salt will provide half of the recommended daily allowance for iodine. The thyroid gland controls our metabolism, and it relies on iodine as a key element. Shrimp, eggs seaweed and cod can also supply our iodine.

Add a Little Iron – Iron helps metabolism by carrying the oxygen needed to burn fat. Enjoy spinach quiches, shellfish, black bean tacos, fortified cereals and your favorite lean meats.

Dark Chocolate Works – If you stick to small bites of dark chocolate with a lot of cocoa you may get a metabolism boost.

Make It Organic – When you choose organic you avoid organochlorines, a pesticide pollutant that can cause weight gain. Some foods such as berries, pears, lettuce, celery, apples, grapes and peaches tend to have more pesticides.
