Can You Really Get Fit in 21 Days?

By Genevieve Cunningham

This magic number of 21 seems to be the hottest number in all of the fitness world right now. From fitness programs to diet plans to promises of major progress … it’s only supposed to take 21 days. But can that possibly be real? In the grand scheme of things, it seems like a very short amount of time. If you’re wondering whether or not to start a new 21-day program for improving health and fitness, check out these important ideas regarding getting healthy in just three weeks.

This Number Might Help Start a Habit

Perhaps it’s not that this is some sort of magic number, but rather that 21 days is enough time to build a habit. It’s not a large enough number to be intimidating, and yet it’s long enough to help build stamina. If you can stick with the program for three weeks, why not four or five or more? Can you really get fit? Maybe not completely … but you can definitely get started down a healthier path.

Progress Can Happen in Three Weeks

If you’re expecting some sort of miracle in three weeks time, you might be disappointed. But if you’re realistic about it, then it might really be possible to see some results in 21 days. Losing 100 pounds? Probably not going to happen. Losing 10? You might be able to do this. Getting in perfect shape is not going to happen in this timeframe, but making progress can absolutely happen if you’ll stick with it the whole time.

Sometimes, It Just Takes a Deadline

Sometimes it doesn’t even matter what the number is. Our brains just need a number. It’s too hard to say “I’m going to change my life forever.” It’s a lot easier to say “I’m going to change my life for the next 21 days.” If you need a deadline, 21 days is a great number to start with. Give it a go and see what happens. You have nothing to lose, everything to gain, and endless opportunities if you can just stick with it.

So can you get fit in just 21 days? It’s unlikely that you’ll meet every health-related goal that you have, but it can be a great start in the right direction. As long as it’s safe and doctor approved, it probably can’t hurt to give it a try. Just remember that there are no magic fixes, and after 21 days is over, it’s important to keep it going for ultimate success.
