Is the Screen Ruining Your Health?
By Genevieve Cunningham
We all love technology. We love phones and computers and internet TV. We love the easy access and the mounds of information that we can find in no time at all. But with all of the good that comes with technology, there is also the potential for bad. And one of the worst things that might come from your technology addiction is a decline in health. But how do you know if your screen time is affecting you negatively? To help manage your technology use and get your health moving in the right direction, check out this quick guide.
Look at Your Time
Not all screen time is bad. The first question you should ask yourself when evaluating your screen time is: How much time do I spend on a device? For some people, between the TV and computer and phone, the answer may be hours per day. If your time on a device is abundant, it may be a good clue that a decline in your health is inevitable. Adjust your time, and you may be able to turn your health and habits around.
Check Your Body for Pain
Too much screen time can lead to pain. If you’re not sure whether your screen time is excessive, do a quick body check for pain. The most common locations will be the back, neck, eyes, and wrists. If you’ve noticed excessive pain in any of these areas, look for a connection to the screen, and then make adjustments to keep your health in check.
Test for Addiction
Yes, you can be addicted to the screen. In fact, it’s a growing problem in the world. But how do you know if you’re addicted? Put your phone down, turn off the TV, and stay away from other devices for a bit. How long do you last before reaching for one of them? Does it make you irritable? Do you justify just a quick internet search? The truth is that addiction happens fast. If you think you may be addicted, cut back, ask for help, and do what it takes to get your technology addiction under control.
If screen time is harming your health, don’t be afraid to cut back. At first, it’ll feel like you’re missing out. But in the long run, you may find that less screen time actually equals more happiness. Cut back slowly, embrace more movement in your life, and get your body and mind used to the lack of a screen. Over time, you’ll find your health improve and your life right along with it.
