Stressed? These Little Tips Can Help
By Genevieve Cunningham
Adults know the feeling of stress all too well. In today's busy world, it's not uncommon for people of all ages to know the feeling -- and the side effects -- of too much stress. It's a serious problem with serious consequences. Too much stress can lead to a decline in both physical and mental well-being, and the worst part is that it's almost impossible to avoid stress in our lives. But it's not impossible to learn to manage it. In fact, learning to cope with and lower daily stress is key to living a long and healthy life. If you're stressed and need some relief, take a look at these coping ideas to help you stay healthy long-term.
Do a Gentle Exercise
Exercise is good for both body and mind. When we're feeling overwhelmed, exercise can focus our attention elsewhere. Instead of worrying about work or finances, you'll only be able to worry about the physical stress that your body is under. If you're up for it, go for an intense workout that really gets your blood moving. But you absolutely don't have to take this route. A gentle exercise -- like yoga or a walk -- will bring the same effects without stressing your body in a new (unwanted) way.
Spend Some Time Outdoors
The great outdoors are good for the soul. The combination of the sunlight, fresh air, and sounds of nature help us feel both more calm and overall happier. The problem is that we don't get enough time in nature. We're too busy running around from one task to another. If you can, make sure you get outdoors for a simple 10 minutes per day. You can go for a walk or just sit in the sun -- it doesn't matter. You may find that after a few days, your body and mind feel more calm and your stress melts away once you step foot outside.
Do a Quick Priority Check
Priorities are what keep us in check, but in order for them to do that, we have to keep priorities in check. Take a quick look at your priorities. Are you worrying about things that don't matter? Let them go. Are you filling your schedule too full? Skim back. Keeping the proper priorities at the top can help lower your emotional and physical load.
Meet With People You Love
We all need interaction -- real, not online -- with people we love. Make sure you're getting a little bit of time with those you love on a regular basis. Meet for coffee, see a movie, or just visit and chat. Getting that face-to-face interaction can immediately lower stress and make us feel happier every day.
Stress can be overwhelming if we allow it. It can take over our lives and cause a decline in health. But we don't actually have to let this happen. Use these tips to keep your stress under control, and you'll have better health and happiness in your life as you move forward.
