Improve Your Sleep Today: Try This

By Virginia Laird

When it comes to sleep, there are plenty who report getting far less than the recommended amount. Many suggest they are simply too busy to go to bed when needed and opt instead for fewer hours of rest. Health and wellness experts admit this habit can prove to be a battle for your overall wellness. These same experts advise that the average adult should get at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. A few tips you can try that can help you get more sleep include:

  • Have a bedtime routine
  • Add a walk in the evening
  • Go to bed when you are tired

Have a Bedtime Routine

Health and wellness experts suggest that having a bedtime routine can benefit your overall ability to sleep. Research indicates that a routine helps the body relax and recognize when it is time to get exhausted. Health and wellness experts suggest that your routine need not last longer than 20 minutes. It should only include things to help relax the body and mind, including meditation, reading, and light stretching, among others. Consider forming a bedtime routine and give it a try to help you get a better night of rest tonight.

Add a Walk in the Evening

Research indicates that a light exercise, prior to hitting the pillow, can help the body release tension, which can help you rest better. Health and wellness experts say this is best done in the form of a light walk. This can take place through your neighborhood or on a community trail. It is advised that this take place at least one hour prior to bedtime and should last at least 20 minutes. Helping your body release excess tension and stress can help it relax more as you prepare to sleep.

Go to Bed When You Are Tired

Health and wellness experts admit that one of the major issues with getting enough rest is not going to bed when you are tired. For many parents, the late evening hours are the best for extra housework and other things which you need to be able to focus on without little ones interrupting. Still, there is research to suggest that going to bed instead can be more beneficial to your health. Rather than doing one last load is laundry or dishes or finding time to work, it is suggested that you head to bed when you are tired. Making sure you get enough sleep can help keep you well, help you focus, and help you be more productive the next day.
