Help Your Family Avoid the Flu: Try This

By Virginia Laird

With flu season racing full speed toward your home, it is necessary to begin preparing to keep your family well. While there is no sure way to prevent the flu from taking over your house, there are a few things you can do to deter the germs from running rampant in your home. For some, getting the flu vaccine is helpful. However, there are plenty who prefer to skip this step. Healthcare experts admit there are other ways to help slow the spread of these germs, including:

  • Make sure everyone gets plenty of sleep
  • Encourage proper hydration
  • Clean the surfaces of your home often

Make Sure Everyone Gets Plenty of Sleep

Getting plenty of sleep is one way to help keep your body well and fight off infection and illness. There is research to prove that a lack of sleep can hamper the immune system's ability to function properly. Most admit to staying up far too late while trying to accomplish the many things that need to be done on a daily basis. Rather than chasing this habit, it is best that you go to bed. According to research, the average adult requires at least six hours of sleep each night. However, there are plenty who need much more than this. Getting enough sleep can require you to stick to a bedtime. Start tonight going to bed at a time that allows you to get sleep you need.

Encourage Proper Hydration

Staying properly hydrated is another way to promote good overall wellness. For most, water is not the beverage of choice. However, it is the beverage that promotes the best hydration. It is advised that you drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. If you are one who prefers soda, juice, and other flavored beverages, now is the time to give flavored water a try. This can be pleasing to the taste buds while offering the hydration you need to stay healthy. With a variety of flavors available you are sure to find one that is pleasing to the taste while offering the hydration you need to stay healthy.

Clean the Surfaces of Your Home Often

During flu season it is best to clean the surfaces of your home often. These are the areas where the family and friends gather. Most often these are also areas where germs collect. Simply wiping your surfaces with a sanitizing wipe can help eliminate germs and avoid the spread of them. The surfaces you should consider wiping routinely include your kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, and any other gathering areas that are used often. Making this a habit can help keep the flu away from your family this flu season.

Don't delay, start today doing all you can to keep your family well and the flu away!
