Three Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

By Rachel Carver

We exercise and try to eat right to keep our bodies healthy. But it is important to focus on your mental health as well. Factors such as poor sleep, high stress, and just burnout can impact our daily activities.

We sometimes do not even realize we are tired or stressed until we hit a wall. The phrase "mental health day" is commonly used when people need to take a break from a fast-paced life to recharge. However, you can keep your mental health steadier with a few tips, which means you'll be able to use that "mental health day" as a mental health bonus.

Get Quality Sleep

The sleep you need is about more than just how many hours you need each night. Keep a regular bedtime, set up a dedicated sleep space, and avoid screens and heavy snacking during the hour before you close your eyes. Sleep impacts stress and anxiety levels, heart health, and the ability to concentrate during the day. It can also make your weight fluctuate. Be intentional about making sure you get the quality and quantity of sleep you need to feel refreshed when you start your day.

Get Regular Exercise

Research links exercise to feeling happy and overall mood improvement. Exercise releases endorphins into your body and brain, improving your mood. This mood often sticks with you throughout the day. Try to move more during the day, and find a physical activity you enjoy such as cycling or swimming. Research published in the Journal of Happiness Studies showed getting 150 to 300 minutes of exercise each week made people 52 percent more happier than less physical activity.

Eat Raw Fruits and Vegetables

Raw fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of vitamins, fiber and phytonutrients. Some are also packed with high amounts of Vitamins C and E, which have anti-inflammatory properties and help with depression. Focus on vegetables such as:

  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Green beans
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach

Incorporate fruits into your diet such as:

  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Berries
  • Kiwi
  • Citrus fruits
