Forming Healthy Habits Can Change Your Life

By Tom Herrin

It is pretty easy to fall into doing things that are not too good for us.  Bad habits can be killers, literally.  I am a pretty bad creature of habit, so I have always been thankful I never started smoking.  I have had plenty of others to take the place of that.  When I was in high school, I got into a pretty bad habit of eating too much too late.  Every night before I went to bed, I would open a can of chili, a can of soup, or a frozen pizza.  I would eat the whole thing.  It wasn’t a very good choice, and I paid the price in weight gain.  Once I evaluated the situation and made a change, I was able to lose more weight than I had ever gained.

Acknowledge Our Need To Change

I really looked forward to eating those late night meals.  In my case, I finally realized that I needed to do some serious changing.  We have to see ourselves from an objective view.  What is it that we are doing that has bad results?  We can’t make excuses for ourselves.  We have to be pretty honest.  After we really look at ourselves and see something that needs to change, we can actually feel better about taking that first step of admitting a fault.

Decide On Some Action And Take It

We have to ask ourselves how we would change what we are doing.  Sometimes the answer may be simple, but it is not the one we want to hear.  Too often we try to think about how we can keep doing what we have been doing and get different results.  That was Einstein’s definition of insanity.  It is not going to happen.  Admitting the need for change precedes action.  In my case, I had to realize I couldn’t eat what I had been eating.  I had to drink more water and eat a piece of fruit if I was hungry.  It made a world of difference.

Plan For Long Term Checkpoints

Once you have taken some steps, you have to find a way to keep it up.  How will you check yourself in one month, three months, six months?  This ongoing accountability will be the final test of success.  Keeping up your positive actions for several months should enable you to form a good habit.  When that happens, you will be in more control of your life.  This is how real change happens.
