Choosing A Green Meal Can Make Big Strides In Health

By Tom Herrin

Making choices in life is what separates people.  Some have minor consequences and very little impact one way or the other.  Some can make a marked difference in things that affect lives such as health and safety.  While food is not generally a safety issue, it can have a serious effect on the people’s health.  For some of those old-timers who always ate meat and potatoes, virtually every meal could really improve their health dramatically by substituting a good salad for a meal every day.  Today’s salads have a lot more variety than they once did.

Fiber Is A Real Plus

Salads are loaded with fiber.  This means that people can feel fuller for longer.  Fibers are generally lower in retained calories.  They can lower blood pressure as well as cholesterol.  A good thing is that salads can be more than lettuce and tomatoes.  There are numerous kinds of lettuce, plus other leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach.  Other good additions could be broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, carrots, peppers, avocado, and plenty of others.  Adding healthy dressings can top it off.  The good oils can help in some digestion.

They Must Have Protein

A lot of the complaints that people have had in the past about salads is that there is no protein.  This concept can be easily changed by adding lean meats and cheeses, eggs, nuts and possibly a flew others.  As long as people avoid bad fats in their protein, a good salad can be a very satisfying and nutritious meal.  When the right combination is available in a salad, people can have more energy and build stronger muscles as a result of adding it to their diet.

Vitamins Are A Natural

The fresh vegetables included in a good salad usually contain an abundant supply of vitamins and other nutrients.  Antioxidants can help prevent some kinds of cancers.  When a plentiful supply of vitamins are present, most people find that they are not as hungry as often.  When this is combined with the previously mentioned low calories of most of it, weight loss can be a great unintended benefit.  Whether people add croutons, bacon bits, olives, or whatever else, creativity can enhance salads and present an entirely different meal each time it is served.  If you currently have a diet straight out of the early American times, you can change your health significantly by including a good salad every day.
