A Smile May Make Your Body More Efficient

By Tom Herrin

Facial expressions are great ways to communicate.  Some are more uplifting than others.  An example is a salesperson who greets customers with a smile.  The patron has a good feeling about doing business at the given establishment.  Teachers who smile are more likely to get good results from students.  They may feel more comfortable and reassured.  Smiling can also have a beneficial effect on health.  Even a fake smile has shown to help.  The old fake it ‘til you make it saying may actually hold true.

It May Play a Part in Productivity

There is an old belief that people who smile and express joy are better workers.  Smiling seems to make a worker feel better about what they do.  It also seems to lift the spirits of those around them.  Other workers may have more trust for those who smile.  People who smile more seem to be offered more opportunities for advancement.  They have also been known to be more creative, allowing them to do a better job of solving problems related to their jobs.

It May Improve Appearance

When people smile, others smile back in return half the time.  They often see others as more understanding when they smile.  It is believed that those who have a smile on their face may look as much as three years younger.  Men are believed to be more likely to approach women who smile than those who make eye contact.  Who doesn’t have a greater degree of good feelings for someone wearing a smile?

It May Improve Health and Brain Function

Our brains have a natural instinct to protect us.  It reacts with negative thoughts to defend from outside factors.  When we smile more, we can create more positive thoughts.  This is believed to help fight against some diseases.  Smiling can also lower blood pressure and reduce stress.  Studies have shown that if people fail to smile, they have more feelings of regret which serves as mood killer.  Avoiding this can help them feel better and have greater resistance to things that could cause them harm.  When something as simple as a smile can make our bodies work better and smoother, it makes the effort much more worthwhile.  Smiling not only makes us healthier, but it can make us look better and be a better worker as well.  That could give anyone something to smile about.
