Play an Unexpected Game for Your Health
By Tom Herrin
Searching for that right activity to improve health can be an exhausting process. It is not so much that it is really all that difficult, but most people tend to limit themselves to many of the same things over and over again. They simply run out of creativity and cannot get outside of that box. Some of this is because many of us think some activities are out of the question because of age, condition, or surroundings. This really could not be further from the truth. Some of the best activities, in terms of usefulness to health, are right under our noses. One of these is field hockey. While it may be an activity that many people ruled out early on their list, it can be fun and something that the whole family can enjoy.
It Is Good for Cardio
There is little doubt that field hockey is a sport that requires some moving and good exercise. The little-known fact is that it can be modified for any age or ability. Whether it is running, jogging, or walking, it has a pace that can allow people to get in a good workout while not realizing it. Anytime people can get their heart pumping steadily, they can improve its efficiency. This helps it move more blood with less effort.
It May Help Burn Calories
Almost constant moving around will burn calories. In field hockey, participants will move and then pause only to find themselves on the move again. The great thing about it is that it is enough fun that people may not realize they are doing so much exercise. When combined with cutting calories and a good diet, it is a way to see some real progress in that weight loss program.
It May Improve Balance and Coordination
Whether we like it or not, as we get older, we tend to lose some of our abilities. Accidents are more frequent, partially due to the fact that we lose some of our overall sense of control of our bodies. The movement required in field hockey can help improve some of this. Moving around while attempting to use a stick and play a ball or puck is sure to sharpen our abilities. After playing only a few times, you will likely see a marked improvement.
