5 Ways to Keep Your Focus on Better Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
One of the hardest parts about improving your health is keeping it on the top of your priority list. Logically, we know that health is important. But in everyday life, we allow a million other things -- technology, fun, delicious foods -- to get in the way. We let the importance of good health slip away, and when we do, we find ourselves eventually starting over on our wellness journey. But we can turn this around. If you would like to put your health first, take a look at these tips for keeping your eye on the prize of better health.
Find Some Motivation
If we don't have anything to motivate us, we're not going to stick with the wellness program. We're not going to skip a night out for sleep or say no to dessert. We need to find our personal motivation. Maybe you want to feel good in your body or keep up with your kids or reduce the use of medication. Find what's important to you, and keep it in mind when temptation arises.
Find an Exercise You Love
If you hate every moment of your exercise routine, you're not going to do it. Why suffer through? Keep trying new things until you find an exercise program that you love -- or at least like! Walk, bike, hike, run. Whatever! If you enjoy the process, you'll be more likely to do it, and way more likely to see the benefit.
Get Better Sleep
A lack of sleep is a serious issue. It makes us grouchy and fatigued and rundown. It weakens the immune system and disrupts metabolism. Make sure that you're getting plenty of sleep so that you'll feel like putting the effort into good health. Better sleep makes a huge difference, so give this one a try first thing.
Limit Your Stress
Stress is a bummer. Though we can't eliminate it altogether, we can certainly take steps to reduce it. Work to lower your stress every day through exercise, meditation, deep breathing, or whatever works for you. The less stressed you feel, the more likely you are to give mental space to other areas of your life -- like your quest for better health.
Learn About Self-Care
Sometimes we're too busy worrying about everyone else to give our own bodies enough thought. But if we don't think of ourselves, we'll never get anywhere. Learn how to care for yourself -- about rest days and healthy hobbies. The more you make yourself a priority, the closer you'll get to better health overall.
It's hard to keep your focus on track. It's hard not to get distracted. But if you're prepared and willing to put in a little work, you can find success. Use these tips to keep your focus on better health, and watch your wellness and your life improve like never before.
