Why You Should Seriously Keep Stress Under Control

By Genevieve Cunningham

Pounding heart, tightness in the chest, and a headache. What's happening? While these symptoms might sound like something extremely serious, they can often be caused by something incredibly common: Stress. Everyone experiences various levels of stress, and it's all too easy to dismiss stress as an everyday fact of life. But the truth is that stress can be incredibly damaging to overall well-being. If you're plagued with stress more often than not, take a look at these reasons why keeping stress under control is crucial for a long life of health and happiness.

It Can Cause a Decline in Physical Health

Just like the symptoms mentioned above, many of the damaging side effects of excessive stress are physical in nature. Many people find their weight climb and their joints ache. Some people find their digestive system slow to a crawl. Some find chest pain and ulcers in the stomach. Stress can affect every part of the body in a negative manner, and without any stress management, these symptoms can turn into long-term problems that plague you for a lifetime.

It Makes Life Feel More Difficult

Perhaps the most common symptom of excessive stress is the mental strain. Stress can make you feel overwhelmed. It makes everything feel just a little bit more difficult. You'll feel less like working out, less like playing with your children, and less like relaxing at the end of the day. Instead, the mind stays in overdrive, constantly worrying and fretting over your stressful situations. This makes every day feel long, exhausting, and draining  and this causes a decline in general quality of life.

It Harms Your Mood

One of the most frustrating symptoms of stress is the effect it has on moods. When you're stressed, you're irritable. You're short tempered. You're more likely to snap. This is a symptom that is noticeable to you as well as others. And until you're able to lower the stress, keeping your moods stable takes more energy and restraint. If you think your moods are more erratic than usual, you may need to take a look at your current stress to see if it's to blame.

Stress happens, and it's going to continue to happen. There's no escaping it! But if you want better health, keeping your stress levels as low as possible is definitely important. Learn some stress management techniques, learn deep breathing, or take up yoga or meditation. The more you keep your stress at bay, the healthier and happier you'll feel every day.
