How to Create Space for Better Habits

By Genevieve Cunningham

Most people could stand to improve their daily habits. Though many people try to be healthy, most of us fail often. We skip the veggies for an extra piece of bread. We skip the exercise in lieu of the newest season on Netflix. And even when we actually try to change our habits, it's hard to stick with it. Why? Because our lives aren't quite set up for these new healthy habits. So what can we do? Before we ever try to change a single habit, we have to create the space to make it happen. To help create the space for better habits in your daily routine, take a look at these tips to start now.

Get Your Sleep Under Control

One of the easiest and most effective places to create space is around your sleeping habits. Set yourself a bedtime and a wake up time, and stick with them. When you have good sleeping and waking habits, you'll suddenly find that you have more time overall. Your body gets on schedule. And as your body catches up on rest, your stress levels drop and you suddenly have more mental space as well. Before anything else, focus on your sleep, and the rest may take care of itself.

Stop Striving for Busy

Being involved is good. Having things to do and people to do them with is also good. But being overly busy can do a number on your well-being. If you can stop trying to stay so busy all the time, you'll find time in all kinds of places. You'll have time after work and time in the evenings. You'll have much more emotional space to try new things -- like good habits! If you are serious about changing your lifestyle, try to stop with the busy and enjoy the moment.

Let Go of Bad Habits

You won't be able to create any new habits until you let go of the old ones. You can't exercise until you stop Netflix binges every night. You can't eat healthy until you let go of donuts for breakfast. Just choose one bad habit at a time, and then work toward letting it go. When you've mastered one, add another, and then replace the bad habits as you can.

If you want to change your habits to enjoy better health and a happier life, you can definitely make it happen! The first step is to make space. Once you create space, making changes will be so much easier and more enjoyable. Use these tips to get moving in the right direction, and you'll be living the life you want in no time at all.
