Super Foods: What About Them?
By Virginia Laird
There is much talk in the health world about superfoods. Without already familiarizing oneself with the term, it can be overwhelming and intimidating. What makes a food super? Superfood is actually a fancy (marketing) way of saying "food full of nutrients.' It is crazy to think, but many of the foods a person can choose have little to no nutritional value. This is why it is important to know exactly what foods can offer vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients needed for a healthy body. A few superfoods to recognize on your next trip to the grocery store can include:
Apples - Widely known for bowel regulation, these are also full of antioxidants and have been linked to reducing a person's chances of developing lung cancer later in life.
Bran Flakes - Along with reducing belly fat, bran flakes are full of fiber which helps move the bowels. They can also assist with reducing inflammation.
Cauliflower - This vegetable is nutrient rich and is known to help prevent some cancers from developing.
Eggs - Eggs are a protein-rich, low calorie food. It is said that including an egg a day in the diet can help with weight loss.
Salmon - Lean proteins are highly recommended among personal trainers as well as healthcare professionals. Salmon is one of the very best. It promotes a healthy heart.
Spinach - This leafy green is loaded with Vitamin K and helps with the body's blood clotting process. It is also well known to build strong bones.
Steel Cut Oats - These are a superfood simply because they help the stomach feel fuller for a longer amount of time. Adding these to breakfast could prevent the need to pound a mid-morning snack.
Strawberries - Including this sweet fruit in the diet can help reduce a person's chances of developing some cancers, including cervical and colon.
Making certain to fuel the body with a balanced, nutrient rich diet, is one of the best things a person can do for his or herself. This can help provide energy needed throughout the day. Eating right can also help a person get enough rest.
Hopefully the next time you are hit with the term superfood, you will be able to chime in and offer a few suggestions to those searching for the right one to include in their diet.
